Section 11 Exhaust Gas Turbochargers
1101. Application
Where the manufacturer obtained the Approval of Quality Assurance System specified in Ch 5 of the Guidance apply to the Type Approval of exhaust gas turbo-chargers (hereinafter referred to as the turbo-chargers in this Section) manufactured at the same manufacturing plant by mass pro- duction methods, in principle, the Society apply to the requirements of this Section for the tests and inspection of turbo-chargers.
1102. Data to be submitted
The following data are to be submitted to the Society in addition to those specified in 102.
(1) Technical data showing the maximum permissible speed and maximum permissible temperature of the turbochargers.
(2) Data and information on the material testing method and system of filing and control of test re- cords on the major components such as rotor shaft, rotor disc, turbine wheel, inducer, impeller
and turbine blades.
1103. Type tests
1. The type test is to be carried out on typical unit taken from the production line, and is to be wit- nessed by the Surveyor, in such a manner as specified in the following:
The type test is, as a rule, to consist of hot running test for the duration of one hour at maximum permissible speed and maximum permissible temperature, overspeed test and performance test. After the test, the turbocharger is to be opened up and examined.
2. For manufacturers who have facilities in their works for testing the turbochargers on an engine for which the turbochargers is intended, hot running test prescribed in Par 1 may be replaced by a test run on the engine for one hour duration at 10 % overload of the maximum continuous output.
1104. Tests of individual turbochargers after approval
1. The major components of the turbocharger are to have identification marks so that they can easily be referred to the related certificates.
2. Material tests of the rotating parts are to be carried out by the manufacturer or his subcontractor under the Society's approval. Relevant certificates are to be prepared and kept in ready for pre- sentation at the request of the Surveyor.
3. The cooling space of each gas inlet and outlet casings is to be hydraulically tested at pressure of either 0.4 Mpa[4 bar] or 1.5 times the maximum working pressure whichever is the greater. Special consideration, however, will be given by the Society, where design or testing feature necessitates modification of the test requirements.
4. Rotating parts such as rotor shaft and bladed wheel or their complete rotating assembly are to be subjected to dynamic balancing test, respectively, complying with the approval procedure for quality control.
5. Impellers and inducers are to undergo an overspeed test for the duration of three minutes at 120 % of the maximum speed at room temperature or at 110 % of the maximum speed at working temperature.
6. As for forged impellers and inducers which are subjected to their quality control through the ap- proved nondestructive examination method, the overspeed test may be dispensed with, except for the case of the impeller and inducer for the type test.
7. Shop tests
(1) A mechanical running test of each unit for the duration of 20 minutes at maximum speed and at operating temperature is to be carried out. However, the duration of the running test may be reduced by the Society in consideration of the results of shop test, etc. And the Society may
accept a bench test carried
out on a sample basis.
