Section 1 Hatchways and Other Deck Openings


101. Doors and hatches


1. Weathertight doors or hatches are to be fitted in all external access openings in:

(1) bulkhead deck and superstructure decks

(2) superstructures and deckhouses

2. Doors and hatches are to be permanently attached and in the accommodation they are to be so ar- ranged that they are operable from both sides.


3. Weathertight doors and hatches are to have the same strength as their surrounding structure.


4. Large glass doors, hatches, windows etc. may be accepted in the aft end of superstructures and deckhouses.

5. A sill hight of 380 mm are normally to be arranged for doors and hatches in front and sides hav- ing direct access to spaces below bulkhead deck.


6. For doors and hatches not giving direct access to spaces below the bulkhead deck and which are not necessary for the operation of the Yacht at sea no sill height is required.


7. Doors in superstructure sides are normally to be hinged in the forward side.


8. Doors and hatches with access to small compartments only, above bulkhead deck, where entry of water into the compartments would not influence stability, may be accepted with a reduced weath- ertight standard based on consideration of the size, location and exposure of the compartment.
