Section 4 Rudder Strength Calculation

401. Rudder strength calculation

1. The rudder strength is to be sufficient to withstand the rudder force and rudder torque as given in Sec 2 and Sec 3. When the scantling of each part of a rudder is determined, the following mo- ments and forces are to be considered.

- For rudder body : bending moment and shear force

- For rudder stock : bending moment and torque

- For rudder stock bearing : supporting force

2. The bending moments, shear forces and supporting forces under consideration are to be determined by a direct calculation or approximate simplified method as deemed appropriate by the Society.
